OUTKAST, BROCKET 99, DON & MIKE CONNECTION; INDIANZ.COM, MORE ERNIE CLIPS

February 17th, 2004

I'm listening to the Don and Mike show today because they had just come back on the air after a two week suspension for saying the word "bullshit" on the air. They were commenting on another jock, Don Imus, who had uttered the word the day before. Most of the show was spent commenting on the suspension and the over-reaction of the United States Government and Federal Communications Commission towards things like dirty words, Janet Jackson's half nude nipple and the like. During the news segment it was mentioned that the CBS network issued another apology (the first being the Janet Jackson breast shot) for Outkast's performance during the now famous Grammy's. Seems as if Indians were on the warpath now. The following is taken from Launch Networks.

This time Native Americans are furious over what they say are "racist stereotypes" portrayed in OutKast's Native American-themed Grammy Awards performance of "Hey Ya" at the end of the show. Outkast's dancers emerged from a fake tepee dressed as American Indians, and then proceeded to bump and grind in feather headdresses, fringe skirts, and braided wigs.

Several Native American organizations condemned the performance as racist, including The Native American Cultural Center (NACC) in San Francisco. "It was the most disgusting set of racial stereotypes aimed at American Indians that I have ever seen on TV," said Sean Freitas, a board member of NACC, in a statement. "It was on par with white people dancing sexually in black face, or yarmulkes, or the vestments of the Catholic Church. I am shocked and outraged."

After the story was related on the Don and Mike show, Don of course pulled out his Brocket 99 tapes and began playing bits from our hero Ernie Scar. They played the safeway commercial and laughed their asses off as usual. Don commented that Native's should "get a life" and wondered if our world has become a whine-fest where any little thing can now become the next scandal. I am in total agreement with Don and Mike that people like this should get a life. We have terrorism, wars, starvation and on and on. And people are worried about women dancing on stage in Native attire. Let's get our god damn priorities straight! Which brings me to my next issue.

I was visiting Indianz.com the other day and saw a rant about Brocket99. They seemed to be upset with brocket99.ca's photo section and really the entire site from what I gathered. I have to admit I don't always like what our cuzin's at .ca do. I think they enjoy playing drunk indian a little too much but they have a right to do that in my opinion. Just as indianz.com has a perfect right to react.

Here is the post that is on the indianz website;

"We need to find concrete solutions on how to oppose garbage like this and set a precendent so others won't follow their lead. The creator of these tapes, Mark Campbell, is now a piller in his community as a weather man on the local television station. If I had my way he'd be answerble to Alberta human rights commision, but as stated in those articles this fuker won't come clean so they can't do sh*t.

Just to show how his twisted mockery has taken a life of its own, just do a google search w/ brocket 99 tapes and see how popularized this garbage is. Also, if you have access to Kazaa or someother shareware site do a search for a song called "lysol rap." You'll notice that it is a brocket 99 influenced project done by what sounds like Newfoundlanders[white people]."

I went to the website and filled out a form so that I could post the following message.

Post to Indianz.com

I understand the problems that people have with Brocket 99. I also see that many web sites have a negative perspective of native people. I will grant you that even my web site pokes fun with our column Ask Lenard. However, as I've said so many times before, we are not here to spread hatred. You'll notice that as you examine brocket99.net and compare it to other sites.

I have always viewed Brocket 99 as a fantastic parody of a Native Radio Station and enjoyed its comedy. I never laughed at it because of its stereotype of Natives. I do not condone or endorse hatred or racism in any form whatsoever. In fact, I am totally against it. However, I do not see Brocket 99 itself as being a tool for hatred. It can however, be turned into such a thing. We all know that even things with the best intentions can be used as tools to hate and rule our fellow man. Take the Bible and other religious books for example. They have been used to turn a people away from their own culture and spirituality. I honestly believe that we all have different ways of seeing things and should be free to laugh and enjoy what we want. Hatred and racism are not acceptable. But neither is censorship! I know people from Brocket, Alberta that like Brockett 99 and other well known Natives that think it is hilarious.

By the way, we do not hold the opinion that Mark Campbell is the creator of the Brocket 99 Tapes and believe that proof should be found before any fingers are pointed. Mr. Campbell has denied his affiliation again and again.

I am glad that this forum exists. Please feel free to email with your thoughts. You may find my email address within the web site. Thank you very much for your time and the opportunity to express my view of Brocket 99.

Sincerely,

Michael Anthony
Owner
www.brocket99.net (not affiliated with brocket99.ca)

My post has not shown and I believe my application to post was refused even though I too, am of native decent. I believe debate is a fantastic thing and that we all need to communicate so that we can come to a better understanding of one another. But that will not happen as long as agendist groups, be they parody sites or cultural ones, stay closed to opposing opinions.

Brocket99.net always welcomes your thoughts. Pro or con. Feel free to email us anytime.

Brocket99.net wants you to get involved in the examination of the "real" Ernie Scar. Ernie has agreed to work with us and let you ask him questions about Brocket 99. That's right! Ask Ernie about the story of Clayton Magnet. Find out how many people actually know about his "dirty little secret" and what happened. If there's something you've been dying to know about Brocket 99, now's your chance to ask. The sky's the limit. Interrogate Ernie Scar Now! Email his ass!

Finally, we have more audio clips of the Ernie Scar Interview for your listening pleasure... or displeasure. There is so much more coming to this web site, you won't believe your Iris!

CD VS. DOWNLOAD, DAWSON CLOSED, CD SET GIVEAWAYS, ERNIE SCAR...

February 3rd, 2004

It's always up to you what to buy or download but I want you to know the truth. When Brocket 99 was created it was meant to be shared among a few friends. It was never intended to be dubbed over and over again by thousands of people and turned into a cult classic. But it happened anyway without the consent or involvement of the creator. It spun out of control and thank God it did otherwise the underground would have never come to hear the best damn parody on earth. And I would have never created this web site so that I could pay homage.

I was buying copies for $20 from well known web sites that should have been burned down for burning me. Then through an email, I found a jewel. The Mog's "most complete version" was pure, a bit overdubbed but still I treasured the length and quality vs. what I had heard before. Remember, at first I only had a 3 to 4 minute copy that was pure trash quality but man did I love it. One Brocketologist recently pointed out that the crap quality is welcomed by us purists. I have to say on some level I agree with him. Even though I now have sole possession of the best quality Brocket 99 source (aside from the creator that is) I do still remember the fantastic days when another piece of crap would arrive in my mailbox and I would find something I'd never had before. It's an amazing feeling.

You should all know that "MP3 is an inferior audio format that uses compression to reduce the sample size. The quality of a 16BIT CD version is much better as there is no compression." That's not my quote but comes from a good friend who owns a recording studio and works as an audio engineer. We digitally re-mastered Brocket 99 from the copy of the original audio source. MP3 destroys that original sound clarity. Still MP3 is free. So if you are not really picky about the highest quality and can download, I say go for it. Note that you will find our copy disguised and chopped up on various sites that claim to have located Brocket from other sources. Trust me, it's ours. No one else has some of the stuff you'll find on the 2 CD set. It really doesn't matter to the people who run this site anyway Because we always have surprises waiting for Brocket 99 fans. Think Brocket 99 is complete? I did. Coming soon; Original commercials that never saw the light of Brocket. Brought to you on an entirely new CD. "SMACK"! Now what Bitch?

That news was brought to us by a "Dick Twang" insider who has 1st hand knowledge of this event. We hope that our Dawson Mole will bring us more information as this story unfolds.

Another story that needs attention is the Persey Klaw mystery. If my source is playing straight I should be receiving an interview in the mail very soon. Persey Klaw challenged Ernie to a one on one debate. According to the story he is irate with our hero. Brocket99.net will provide you with more details and possibly the debate that Persey wants in weeks to come.

And speaking of Ernie Scar, you can listen to more of the interview files and chime in with your thoughts. Is this the real Ernie Scar? You decide.

Finally; Congrats to our very first winner of a Brocket 99 2 CD set! It's Ron from Strathmore, Alberta. You could be next month's winner All you do is buy the Brocket 99 2 CD set via paypal or postal money order and if you are selected, you get your money back including shipping!. That's all there is to it. And keep checking the Brocket 99 Calendar for one day super specials, events and free stuff! It's been a long time sweety.

I'll go see Cher before I pay to see you,

FULL BLOODED NATIVE FROM  BROCKET RESERVE SAYS BROCKET 99 "IT'S COOL"!

January 9th, 2004

I had a very pleasant conversation with a young man from the Brocket reserve tonight who said "well never really got to get much into it,but i thinks its cool" He was of course speaking of Brocket 99. He went on to say that he thought some of it was stupid (too).

We talked for a good half hour and this polite intuitive guy told me that life on the Brocket reserve is cool and sucks sometimes too. He thinks he'll move into the city about an hour away after he graduates. He's not sure what the rest of his family will do. He said the pow wows are good when I asked what was cool in Brocket. 'It gets way too cold especially at night' and he likes the Brocket summer much better. He is a full blooded Piikani (Blackfoot for Brocket he tells me) born and raised on the Brocket reserve. It was great talking with this very intelligent young man. He shows fantastic promise and is a credit to his people and all people. I thank him for contacting and talking with me! - Michael

Just a quick update. I've received several wild emails over the past week. One claimed that he did an interview with a man named Persey Klaw at the local Community College station where he worked awhile back. He says Persey is quite upset with ole Ernie Scar and wants to meet him for a showdown.

I also talked witha very nice "nameless" person who might be able to provide us with some 1st generation copies of Brocket Parody material. That's a longshot but I just couldn't help telling you. I'm totally fuckin' psyched!

Which reminds me. We are looking for people with "new" or unreleased Brocklet parody material for our Not so Brocket Volumes 2 and 3 CD's which will be released shortly. If you've got something to offer, we'd love to hear it!  EMAIL US

That's it! (Another Freddy Running Rabbit Production)

TONS OF UPDATES, NEW STUFF, ERNIE SCAR INTERVIEW...

January 5th, 2004

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great Holiday Season! Thanks to everyone for your good wishes. I am always glad to hear from you. Now, on to the Brocket News.

If you've visited us before you've noticed a few small changes to the web site. We hope this will make things even easier for you.  We're also gearing up for much more content and a better product line complete with shopping carts so that you don't have to buy everything separately. I know that's a big pain in the ass. Additionally, the site will contain even more serious issues concerning Native Life and news. But our focus will always remain Brocket 99 and parody.

I've already received fantastic comments about the new Brocket 99 Site logo and yes products with the logo will be available

The Ernie Scar interview has its own page and you can download portions of our talk with "the real creator of Brocket 99". There will be text of the interview available as well.  We've removed a few links that were used as filler when we first started. Some of the content was saved and will be scattered throughout the site.

More big news. Brocket99.net will randomly give away one Brocket 99 2 CD set every month during 2004! No shipping, no hidden charges. That's a promise! We will ship a free CD set to someone who orders the 2 CD set or another item via credit, debit or check through the web site. Cafe Press orders do not qualify. All you do is place your order and if you are the winner, you will be refunded almost immediately!

Few people will glance the Brocket 99 calendar consistently. That's too bad because if you check it regularly you'll find special one day or one week bargains that will disappear as quickly as they've appeared. For instance, sometime this month we'll sell the 2 CD set for only $2.00! You heard right. This is a special one day only sale. It will happen soon. But you have to check your Brocket Calendar often to find deals like this.

The calendar will also include very important dates in Brocket 99 history. Wanna know when Bon Scott was found dead from a night of heavy drinkin? Are you interested in when Lysol first appeared on the scene. Is there a National Natives day? When is Clarence Weasel Fat's birthday? You'll find out by viewing the Brocket 99 Calendar!

The Holiday Party Pack is now the anytime Party Pack! Get all 7 CD's (so far) for $39.99.

And finally, how bout' a Native story with a great moral.

This is the story of Onestone the Indian Brave.

This was his Indian name given to him because he had only one testicle. After years and years of this torment Onestone cracked and said, "If anyone calls me Onestone again I will kill them!"

The word got around and nobody called him that any more. Then one day a young girl named Blue Bird forgot and said, "Good morning Onestone." He jumped up, grabbed her and took her deep into the forest. There he shagged her all day, he shagged her all night, he shagged her all the next day, until Blue Bird died from exhaustion. The word got around that Onestone meant business.

Years went by until a woman named Yellow Bird returned to the village after many years away. Yellow Bird who was Blue Bird's cousin was overjoyed when she saw Onestone and hugged him and said, "Good to see you Onestone." Onestone grabbed her and took her deep into the forest where he shagged her all day, shagged her all night, shagged her all the next day, shagged her all the next night, but Yellow Bird wouldn't die!

What is the moral of the story?

You can't kill two birds with one stone.

Well that's about it. I'm gonna go over to da Bridge Inn.

MORE "REAL" ERNIE SCAR INFO, SITE UPDATES & MORE

December 20th, 2003

I'm skeptical by nature. A net friend of mine said that to me recently. That made me realize that I'm the same way. Except I'm gullible and want to believe what people say too. I don't know how I can be all of these things but I just try to figure everything out as I go along.  Of course that makes for a scrambled life at times but usually things work themselves out and I am none the worse for wear. Which brings me to our favorite subject.

Two weeks ago I told you that I would have more information about my chat with the man who claims to be the "real" Ernie Scar. Here is some of that interview for you in wonderful text form. And yes it will be available on CD.

We first talked about Mark Campbell.

'Ernie' "I can have affidavits, I can have court dockets.. and they still won't believe me. I can go down the street and say; Yeah I'm Ernie Scar and they'll all tell me to fuck off. You just want a piece of the action. We know it's Mark Campbell....  You have to choose to believe me or not to believe me. It's gotten to the point where there's no fear in standing up and claiming responsibility for it because...

mlogosmall.gif (1041 bytes) They're not going to believe you anyway.

'Ernie'    Laughs. You have to choose to believe me or not to believe me.

mlogosmall.gif (1041 bytes) ( I start talking about the site and why I started it)

ERNIE SCAR COMES FORWARD FOR AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW...

December 7th, 2003

A man claiming to be the "real" Ernie Scar has come out of the tipi to be interviewed exclusively by Brocket99.Net. The interview is already in the can and we learned more than we could have ever dreamed. You heard right Brocketologists! After months of searching our journey may be over. Of course I can't be 100% sure until we get a voice analysis. That could take months and  will cost big money. Any offers to finance it?

The facts are that we've talked to numerous people who have been rumored to be Ernie. All of those interrogations including the infamous Mark Campbell interview led us to a dead end. This "Ernie Scar" has emailed me for months. He's remained mysterious. Then I finally received a phone call. At first he didn't sound like Ernie Scar. Of course he wasn't doing Ernie's voice. He threw a couple of Ernieisms out and, well because I'm a skeptical journalist (right) by nature, I just wasn't sure. But then it started seeping out. Here and there I could hear the laugh. His linguistics were similar. The inflections were exact! He had stories. He told them with no hesitation. Other people are confirming what he's said. And... they all made sense!

My instincts are usually right. I believe this man. If I'm wrong then I'll keep hunting and this guy can have a big laugh at our expense. But there's so much more to this story and it's coming soon to this site! You wanted the truth. You're going to get it.

And of course don't forget to check out the new letters in Ask Lenard! Got a question about Love, Life or Lysol? Ask Lenard!

Next time... A clip of his voice as Ernie Scar.

NATIVE COMEDIAN DON BURNSTICK SPEAKS OUT ABOUT BROCKET 99...

December 4th, 2003

I recently wrote to popular Native comedian Don Burnstick to find out whether he'd be interested in doing an interview with me. I also wanted to find out what he thought of Brocket 99. He's not thrilled with this radio parody in the least. Here is Don's first reply; "when I 1 st started doing comedy alot of people  asked me if I was the one who did brocket 99..........of cousre I said no.  plus the damage it has done over the yrs to the stereo typing of our people.......it was one of the things that inspired me to become a comedian....to show what I believe is true Indian humour...that is why I don't swear in my shows. or cds... I just released a new cd...my 1st in about 4 yrs....its called "redskin radio"  spoofs all the local rez radio stations accross our land"

So I wrote Don Burnstick again to ask if he would agree to be interviewed about this subject. Here is my exact email ;  Hi Don, I'm still very interested in doing an interview with you. If you can't send your CD to review I'm sure I can find some mp3 material and bio stuff so I'll have enough skeletal information. I'm actually going to buy a copy of the new CD if you can't send it as I'm very interested in hearing you. I am still most interested in your stance on Brocket 99. My site is not set up just to praise it. I really think it is important to get the other side of the story as well. If you'd still rather not do an interview, would you mind writing your feelings about Brocket 99 so that it can be published on the web site. It will appear on the Native issues page. You had mentioned to me that "it (Brocket 99) was one of the things that inspired me to become a comedian to show what I believe is true Indian humour" I hope you will follow up on that. Thanks once again for your time. Sincerely, Michael Anthony

Here was his response; "lets get one thing out of the way....my stance on brocket 99 is one of disgust.....the humour on it was not funny and very very crude. and total dishonored the Blackfoot nation.......when I 1st heard it all I could think was" how the people in brocket....Pegan Nation felt. still not sure the origin of that particular recording but I think it first serviced in the late 80s.......it was there I wanted to show what I felt was true indian humour..........that is why I made my recordings..... that is it. hope you quote me on this."

I want everyone to know that Don Burnstick was very courteous and professional each time he wrote to me. It does seem that he, like many other Natives is quite concerned that something like Brocket 99 was made, or exists and even continues to grow in popularity. Again, I can understand this and I respect his point of view.

However, I have a problem with his view because I've never believed hatred to be the true nature of Brocket 99. I believe that is is simply a great parody and that Natives just happen to be the source of the joke. Many people I've talked with have said some of their Native friends "love" Brocket 99 and other related parodies. They continued by saying that they thought Brocket was funny and not hateful.

Now I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between "spoofing" and "stereotype" but I assume if  people believe that there is hatred or ill will involved in a "parody" it ceases to be comedy and becomes a smear campaign. And if that's the truth, I agree with that definition. Don Burnstick points out that he does not swear in his shows or on his CD's. But I see that he does poke fun at Natives. You can easily see this on his web site and I'm assuming fun is made on his CD's as well.

The fact is that people do swear. People do make fun. And I'm sure that there are at least a few Natives who wonder why Don Burnstick would stereotype them as being bingo playing KFC eating people. It just confirms my belief even more that it's all about perspective. One man's trash is another's treasure. Don Burnstick is disgusted by Brocket 99. I am convinced that this is radio genius at its very finest. Can we agree to disagree? The invitation for an interview is still there Don. I appreciate your time and opinion.

Don Burnstick's quotes about Brocket 99 will be placed in our Native Section. If you are Native, we'd like your opinions too. Please feel free to email them.

Quickly one other piece of information. Every so often I receive an email or see an entry that says this to me "By the way... Brockett 99 was produced in '84, not '86 as you originally stated. "  This seems to be a huge rumor and it's believed fervently by many people. I'm very anal about this stuff so I'll tell you 84' believers that Brocket 99 couldn't possibly have been released in 1984 simply due to the fact that AC/DC didn't release Fly on the wall (one of Ernie's favorites) until 1985.

AC/DC - Fly on the wall Original Release Date: July 1985

Anal as ever,

Michael
